Clinical Research Training Program
Director: Stuart T. Hauser, MD, PhD
Co-Director: Robert W. McCarley, MD
The Clinical Research Training Program (CRTP) has been in operation for 27 years, representing one of the most continuous such efforts in the country. It is also distinguished by its commitment to multi-disciplinary training, including that of outstanding students drawn from a spectrum of sciences relevant to clinical psychiatry research. Student fields range from basic biological brain research, to long-term family studies, to longitudinal developmental studies of psychopathology and resilience.
Currently, the CRTP offers seven stipends that support postdoctoral candidates (MD, PhD, EdD) for two-year fellowships, contingent upon successful completion of the first year. Preceptors from 46 different research sites throughout Harvard are paired with appropriate postdoctoral fellows.
In addition to the core research mentor teaching relationship, all fellows
attend a weekly interdisciplinary seminar at JBCC, led by Dr. Hauser (psychosocial
approaches) and Dr. McCarley (biological approaches). At these seminars,
fellows present their work, participate in a grant-writing workshop, and
partake in a substantive module which changes each year depending on the
interests of the seminar class. Past topics have included intelligence,
emotion, language, memory, depression paradigms and coping processes. The
final component of training involves course work at Harvard and other universities,
focused on relevant topics such as multivariate statistics, neuroscience
and experimental design.
