English Language Arts
Manville’s literacy program integrates the study of literature, phonetic instruction, oral language, and writing. Students read literature from required authors, genres and cultures that are integrated across the curriculum.
Sequential, structured phonics lessons, drawn from various linguistic reading programs, assist students in gaining basic decoding skills. Manville incorporates spelling as part of the phonetic instructional process. Reading Specialists provide individual and small group tutorial services for students who need additional support in the areas of reading, spelling, and/or writing.
Writing instruction is part of all subject areas and addresses both content and grammar. Manville students develop skills by writing often and in a variety of formats: short answers, paragraphs, letters, journals, research reports, poetry, etc. Manville utilizes a structured writing program, which includes sentence and paragraph templates for writing. Beginning with an emphasis on writing complete basic sentences and then utilizing expanded sentence formats, students progress to writing a variety of types of paragraphs (descriptive, enumerative, persuasive) and lastly a three-paragraph essay.
