Additional Clinical Services at Manville
Wednesday Classroom Meeting:
The Manville staff takes a team approach to working with students. Case managers/clinicians, teachers, milieu counselor, specialists, and supervisory staff meet regularly to discuss his or her progress. Team members evaluate a child’s functioning in school and his or her relationships with peers and staff, and construct behavior intervention plans to maximize students’ ability to successfully navigate their school routines.
Manville Treatment Planning Conferences:
Manville considers parents to be important members of their child’s Manville treatment team. One of the most important ways that we facilitate this is to invite parents to participate in an annual treatment planning meeting with the rest of the child’s Manville team. At this conference the child’s team evaluates student progress in the areas of: social/emotional development, academics, behavioral issues, peer relations, etc.
Crisis Management/Psychiatric Emergencies:
Students’ behavioral crises receive immediate de-escalation and safety management intervention by Manville’s staff, trained in procedures for maintaining student safety. Milieu counselors, clinicians and educational staff within the school take a proactive and prevention-focused approach when children experience behavioral crises. Behavioral support and skills training, combined with a theme of acceptance, are the hallmarks of the Manville School response to students’ behavioral difficulties.
Clinical Training and Outcome Evaluation:
As part of Judge Baker Children’s Center’s mission to provide training experiences for mental health professionals working with children, each year the Manville School conducts a training practicum experience for approximately 6 to 10 graduate students in mental health training programs in the Boston area. Manville has standing relationships with graduate schools of Social Work, Clinical Psychology and other Counseling/Psychology training programs. All trainees (or “interns”) are supervised by a licensed, full-time Manville clinician (either a psychologist or social worker), and participate in various training activities during the course of the practicum.
In addition to its commitment to training, Manville School is also invested in improving its clinical services over time. To achieve this, Manville actively collects behavioral and service delivery data in order to evaluate the effectiveness of our work with students. Parents/guardians are asked to participate in this endeavor by providing periodic questionnaire feedback regarding students’ functioning. For students who have left our program, Manville conducts a follow-up study to systematically collect information regarding their progress as they move forward with their lives.
