Welcome to Judge Baker's Manville School.

Since 1957, we've provided hundreds of students the combination of educational, behavioral and clinical assistance they need through our Manville school, an on-site therapeutic day school for children (ages 5 - 15).

The Manville SchoolHistory & Affiliations

Since 1957, the Manville School has been recognized as a leader among special needs day schools in the Boston area. Judge Baker's affiliations with Harvard Medical School, Children's Hospital and local colleges and universities facilitate Manville's ability to attract highly skilled professionals. Manville is a respected training site for graduate students in special education, child psychology, child psychiatry and social work. Our location at Parker Hill Avenue in Boston enables the school to provide additional services for students and their families.

The Manville School is approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education and is a member of the Massachusetts Association of Approved Private Schools (maaps). The school provides educational services for up to 100 students and has approximately 70 educational, clinical and counseling staff members.

Clinical Services

Psychologists and social workers at the Manville School provide fully integrated clinical services. Individual, group and family therapy are provided on-site to support a student's psychological and educational functioning. Manville staff work collaboratively with community bsed therapists and/or agencies to coordinate treatment for students.

Harvard-Manville Mentoring ProgramHarvard-Manville Mentoring Program

Manville offers a Mentoring Program that pairs a Manville student with a Harvard Medical student in a "big brother/sister" relationship. Mentors make at least a yearlong commitment to spend time weekly with their Manville student both at the school and in the community. Mentors function as a role model and companion for students.

Educational Program

A strength of the Manville School is its innovative educational program which promotes active learning, problem solving and social interaction. Manville's academic curriculum is aligned with the Massachustts Curriculum Frameworks and is carefully adapted to ensure that students can access state wide learning standards. We offer educational support services in the areas of reading, math, speech and language, occupational therapy, computer technology and physical education. Read more.

Medical Services

Manville employs the services of a board certified child psychiatrist as a medical director to manage all health related components of our program. Full-time nursing coverage is provided at Manville School, and school-based psychopharmacology evaluations and treatment are available to a number of Manville students. These services are provided either by Manville's medical director or by a psychiatric resident or nurse practictioner under his supervision.

Summer Program

Manville offers a four-week summer program that provides students the opportunity to maintain and build on academic, social/emotional and behavioral gains made during the school year. Mornings are devoted to academic activities, which include a variety of hands-on, collaborative learning experiences. In the afternoons, students participate in structured, recreational activities, which may include trips to local beaches or parks, as well as electives in the areas of art, drama, gardening, etc. These offer students exposire to community-based activities and multiple opportunities for social skill building.

Admissions Information

Manville School admits children, ages 5-14, who have emotional, behavioral, and neurological or learning disabilities. Prospective students must be of at least average intelligence, have a TEAM evaluation and be approved by their local school district for a private day school placement.

Manville's intake process offers parents an opportunity to tour the school and to explore the array of educational and support services available in our program. The Manville School will admit a child when there is a good match between the child's needs and the school's ability to provide services.
