Judge Baker Children’s Center to host Camille Cosby 'Walk a Mile in My Shoes' Essay Contest
January 10, 2005
BOSTON, MA - Judge Baker Children’s Center’s Media Center provides a unique opportunity for Boston area girls to share their experiences of growing up today through the Camille O. Cosby “Walk A Mile In My Shoes” Essay Contest. The contest encourages girls, ages 10-16, to write personal essays about the joys, challenges, and hardships in their young lives. The Center, dedicated to ensuring the well-being of children, seeks to increase awareness about issues facing young urban girls by providing this forum for their voices to be heard.
“During adolescence, girls commonly regard their problems and worries as insignificant and feel that adults do not take the time to listen,” explains Oluranti McClaine, Youth Program Coordinator of the Media Center at Judge Baker. “We have worked hard to design a program that empowers girls through writing.”
The essay contest is funded by Dr. Camille O. Cosby, noted producer, educator, and philanthropist, and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay. For the past five years, girls throughout Boston have used the contest to articulate their responses to the pressures of school, peer relationships, and family concerns.
The Media Center will announce finalists at an award luncheon held at Judge Baker Children’s Center on January 15, 2005 at 1:00 pm. Members of the media are welcome to take photos, interview participants, and view excerpts from the submitted essays.
