Milieu Counselor
Description:
Functions as a member of the three person classroom team to support the educational process for students. Primary responsibilities pertain to behavior management and the maintenance of a therapeutic milieu.

Manville is an approved day school providing an innovative, integrated academic and therapeutic program. We service a diverse population of students from 35 different cities and towns in eastern MA. Students are referred from their public schools and all are on IEPs. Our students have a variety of emotional, behavioral, learning and/or neurological issues which impede their ability to function within their public school settings. We provide an interactive, hands-on curriculum which is fully aligned with MA Curriculum Frameworks. We offer excellent professional development, supervision, and support. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Help maintain the learning environment by supporting students within the classroom and working proactively to reduce behavioral difficulties
- Supervise student time out of class and processing with students regarding their behavior according to Manville protocol.
- Provide crisis intervention and back up support as necessary and requested.
- Actively work with classroom team to develop appropriate behavioral interventions and individualized behavior plans for students.
- Collect and analyze daily behavioral data.
- Maintain student attendance and lunch count data on a daily basis on the ODM system
- Actively participate in weekly classroom meetings.
- Collaborate with counseling staff in the development and implementation of systems of accountability for students.
- Assist in the supervision of P.E., lunch, and recess.
- Communicate with parents/guardians regarding significant events.
- Facilitate work for student conflict resolution.
- Co-lead weekly student therapeutic groups with clinician and/or assistant teacher.
- Regularly attend and participate in weekly counselor meeting.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in mental health related field.
- At least two years of related experience working with children. Demonstrated strong skills in communication and behavior management.
- Ability to be flexible and to work collaboratively. Ability to respond to emergency situations quickly and safely. Strong skills in writing. Demonstrated capacity for therapeutic attunement, empathy, and creative problem solving. Good understanding of developmental, learning, multi-cultural and behavioral issues. Receptive to supervision and professional development.
